Space Invaders Green New Arcade

This is another project that I developed, this time for a client who asked me to set up an arcade with the original theme of the famous Space Invaders … but in green …

I used a Spanish  cabinet model very common in Portugal, because it´s very rare or even impossible to find original cabinets here. I did the adaptation of the Space Invaders artwork which included turning all the original colours to several shades of green.

I started by preparing the cabinet for painting, taking everything out from the inside (monitor, PCBs, etc.) so it was completely empty. As there was no intention to replace the t-molding, I protected it with tape so it wouldn´t be  damaged by the sandpaper and also to protected it when painting.

Some parts of the cabinet are not going to be fully covered with the decal and will be painted black, so I chose to paint everything black to be more consistent.

Some metal parts had to be cleaned of rust and painted again. Typically in these cases, I use Hammerite (applied directly to the rust) in order to give it a good finish and make it resistant to oxidation.

The original acrylic control panel of this cabinet was in very poor condition and its design was unsuitable for the theme of Space Invaders in green, so I had to redo the part in acrylic, using a transparent, and shaping with a gun hot air, the curve identical to the original.

Applying the decals was relatively simple. It’s very important that all surfaces are well prepared so the decals fit properly.

With the decals applied, I tested the buttons and joysticks to see how it looked, and the result was great.

Since greeen is the predominant colour, I chose to apply some green chrome effect iluminated arcade buttons and arcade joysticks with a white ball, which I bought at Gremlin Solutions. This is all connected to an I-PAC, below the control panel, so it doesn’t have too much wires. From the control panel there is only one cable to the PC, connecting to an USB port.

Finally … Power on and this is the final result 🙂 Hope you like!
