1. Destructive Wave
An extremely powerful, albeit high-level, spell, this one deals an incredible amount of damage under 2 damage types- 5d6 thunder damage and 5d6 either radiant/necrotic damage. Its attack hits within a 30-foot radius, which means it can hit multiple targets. Those who are hit can make a constitution saving throw to take ½ damage, but if they fail, they will take full damage and will be knocked prone.
A support role can prove to be tricky for a Paladin since it must often be used strategically so that the Paladin stands a fair chance to use their Smite spells. Aid is a common level 2 spell among clerics, artificers & Paladins, and the spell amps up to 3 allies’ HP maximums by 5 points and lasts for 8 hours. Aid is a low-level alternative to Aura of Vitality, and it does not require concentration. Lastly, for each level higher this spell is cast, the target gains 5 more HP.
This one is fun for Paladins built more around social or battle-related power such as Oath of Conquest. Since Paladins can cast spells based on Charisma, the ones that can help in social interactions and gaining ground during combat are useful. This one lets the caster dictate a one-word command that the opponent must obey, within the set parameters that they must understand the language spoken, must not be undead, and won’t do anything that could cause it direct injury. Lastly, to avoid the effects of this spell, the target needs to make a Wisdom saving throw.
Taken from the Player’s Handbook and can be used by Warlocks, Wizards, Sorcerers & Paladins. This potent 4th-level spell can permanently remove a creature from play if targeting an extraplanar creature. The spell slot cost can be hefty, but banishment needing a Charisma saving throw can make the spell extremely effective.
One of the most famous 5E Paladin spells, Revivify is a staple for healers in any campaign, as it has the power to bring another character back to life if done within a specific time frame. However, the time frame is extremely slim, as the caster must use it within a minute. It is extremely expensive, taking up an entire 300 gold-piece diamond.
There lies a little discrepancy with the language of the spells, but this one can be used with the necromantic spell,
Gentle Repose, which if employed within that same minute, can seemingly extend the time frame for Revivify to be cast. This lets combat settle down before the downed player character has to be restored to life.
Taken from the Player’s Handbook, this one has a casting time of 1 action. Belonging to the school of Enchantment, this level 1 spell can often be underestimated. The caster is provided 3 targets on an additional d4 roll to add to the attack or saving rolls. Sure this might seem minimal, but it serves greater support if optimized by Paladins.
At level 6, Paladins take up Aura of Protection, a class ability granting anyone within 10 feet an additional bonus to all saving throws,
the same as the Paladin’s Charisma modifier. Combine Aura of Protection’s bonus with Bless, and party members around you could add as much as 9 towards saving throws.
7. Aura of Vitality
Taken from the Player’s Handbook, this has a casting time of 1 action, with up to a 30-foot radius around you. Belonging to the school of Evocation, this is handy for the best of healers. It can be used to heal and buff up the entire party over time, while the battle is still going on afterward.
As you move, the area of effect shifts as well, healing allies within it. You can learn this spell at level 3, and it is recommended regardless of your build.
8. Find Steed
Taken from the Player’s Handbook and Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, this level 2 spell is one of the most iconic DnD Paladin spells. It summons a loyal, sapient mount that abides by the Paladin’s orders, from charging them into battle to transporting them across the land. Those you summon can differ in appearance, bringing in varied abilities to your party. It summons a mount as powerful as a war horse. Unless your character dismisses your steed, the supernatural mount stays for as long as they don’t lose their HP, making them a permanent companion on your adventures.
9. Blinding Smite
Paladins being first and foremost front-line combatants, are incredible fighters with tank skills and extremely helpful combat spells. Blinding Smite happens to be one of the greatest Paladin spells that pushes them to take the War Caster feat.
This may not be the lowest level smite Paladin spell, but it is not too high of a level as well. This level 3 Paladin spell has great effects like dealing 3d8 radiant damage on top of blinding the enemy until it succeeds in a Constitution saving throw.
10. Aura of Purity
Taken from the Player’s Handbook, this one has a casting time of one action, till a 30-feet radius around the caster. Belonging to the school of Abjuration, this one is a great spell for Paladins.
As warriors radiating power from otherworldly holy beings, Paladins make use of their divine gift to protect and heal all allies. With the number of Auras available to them, they can save others from failed saving throws and other debilitating conditions such as charm and fear.
This level 4 Abjuration spell emits a 30-foot radius around the caster. All allies in the aura grow immune to disease and poison damage, and gain an advantage on saving throws against blinded, charmed, frightened, deafened, paralyzed, stunned, and poisoned effects. The range at which it supports others keeps them from annoying conditions.
